Overview
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. *Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood glucose *
*Most Common types *
*Type 1 *: Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. The immune system attacks and destroys cells in the pancreas, where insulin is made. Research is yet to determine the exact causes of type 1 diabetes.
*Type 2 * Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body becomes resistant to insulin, and sugar (glucose) builds up in your blood. It’s the most common type—about 90% to 95% of people living with diabetes have type 2.
*Type 2 *
Type 2 diabetes stems from a combination of genetics and lifestyle factors. Having overweight or obese increases your risk. This condition runs in families. Family members share genes that make them more likely to get type 2 diabetes and be overweight.
